Happy 1st Birthday Mateo!

We are celebrating a very special day here at the Zoo. Mateo, a prehensile-tailed porcupine, is turning 1 year old on December 5!

Mateo was born at the Zoo in December of 2014 and was hand raised by our veterinary staff. He plays a very important role as an animal ambassador by teaching and inspiring future generations to be environmental stewards and conservation activists.

Life as a 1 Year Old

  • Mateo’s favorite foods are banana, avocado and corn on the cob.
  • He was 509 grams when he was born and now he is 5.4 kg!
  • He is full size now.
  • He loves to run and play and climb on trees.
  • He continues training through targeting to get mental stimulation and exercise.
