Found In: Southeastern United States: from southeast Virginia down to south Florida, over to central Texas and into Missouri/Swamps, ponds, palmetto forests, marshes, dry forests, and wetlands

- This species is the only venomous water snake in North America. The whole body of this species lays on the surface of the water; only the head of non-venomous species lays on the water surface
