Common Peafowl

Description
Domestic peafowl are raised in many color variations including white feathered, pied, and black-winged. White feathered peafowl have white feathers but are not considered albino because they do not lack pigmentation. Pied peafowl have a random amount of white feathers scattered throughout their plumage. Black-winged peafowl have feathers that are darker with blue and green tips.
Range & Habitat
These birds can be found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka throughout deciduous forests.
At the Virginia Zoo, peafowl can be found outside the World of Reptiles Conservatory.

Diet
Common peafowl are omnivores primarily consuming leaves, tender stems, fruits, blossoms, roots, insects, snakes, lizards, frogs, and occasionally small mammals.
Conservation
The population is suspected to be stable in the absence of evidence for any declines or substantial threats. The species is considered sacred throughout much of its range and therefore is not persecuted.
Fun Facts
- Though commonly known as the peacock, peacocks are all male and peahens are female.
- Domestic peafowl color variations that are not found in the wild include cameo, purple, charcoal, opal, bronze, peach, midnight, jade, taupe, hazel, and indigo.
