Recycled Enrichment Boxes

America Recycles Day (ARD), celebrated on November 15 every year, is dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and to buy recycled products.

Recycled Enrichment Boxes at the Virginia Zoo

The Virginia Zoo is also committed to recycling by reusing on-ground items such as cardboard boxes, toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, etc., to create fun and exciting animal enrichment items.

Volunteers collect recycled materials and transform them into requested animal enrichment activities. These items usually have food or scents inside to exercise the animal’s natural behaviors such as foraging, hunting, stalk-and-chase behavior, scent stimulation, etc.

In the past, volunteers have created items such as:

  • SuperBowl team boxes
  • Large, cardboard rhinos
  • Holiday “presents”
  • 5 feet tall bowling pins
