Habitat Heroes
What is a Habitat Hero?
A habitat hero is someone who is engaged in restoring and protecting native habitat through education, awareness, or direct action.
What is the Habitat Heroes program?
The Virginia Zoo’s Habitat Heroes program is an education, awareness, and behavior change campaign asking homeowners to replace 20 square feet of lawn with native wildlife habitat. The program began in spring 2025 through a generous grant from the Hampton Roads Community Foundation (HRCF). The 2026 program is funded through an HRCF grant and the Virginia Zoo’s own Conservation Committee.
Program Components:
Native Plant Workshops:
This year, we will be hosting 6 native plant workshops of varying levels from beginner to more advanced taught by our partners at Southern Branch Nursery. Attendees learn how to create a sustainable, low-maintenance landscape that supports local wildlife and thrives in the Hampton Roads environment. Workshops will be offered for a minimal fee of $5, which will go to the Virginia Zoo’s Conservation Fund. Workshop dates and registration links will be posted here by March 2026.
Demonstration Gardens:
We have several on-grounds demonstration gardens that show guests what 20 square feet of native habitat could look like in their yard. Check these out around the Zoo. The Virginia Zoo is also working with several partners to build demonstration gardens around Hampton Roads. Check back later for more information on these gardens.
Plant Giveaways:
In 2026, the Virginia Zoo will be giving away 1,500 FREE native plants for you to take home and plant in your garden.
