Volunteering at the Virginia Zoo is rewarding and fun!

The first step in volunteering is to click here to download an application, fill it out and submit it. Docent, Horticulture and BEARS volunteers must attend a training session before working. Sessions are held several times a year. These volunteers also will be asked to complete a background check.

The next orientation for new volunteers will take place in the spring, whatch this space for the date. The BEARS program is full and we are not currently accepting new applicants. See below for the next Junior Docent orientation.

Docent Volunteer Program
Help share the Zoo’s important education messages about conservation and the animals with which we share our world. Minimum age is 18 years old. Click here for a job description.

Horticulture Volunteer Program
Use your green thumb to help out in our gardens. We need volunteers who know about gardening to help staff with plant care, landscaping and more to keep the Zoo beautiful and exhibits spectacular.

B.E.A.R.S. – Behavior, Enrichment and Animal Resource Squad
The BEARS program is currently full and we are not accepting new aplicants. Assist with animal husbandry of the Zoo's program animals, participate in behavioral observations, enrichment construction and other special projects. Minimum age required is 18 years old. Click here for a job description.

Special Event Volunteer Program
The Virginia Zoo hosts several special events filled with family fun and activities. Individuals as well as community groups, organizations and clubs, are needed for a variety of roles, including set up, assisting guests, helping with logistics and more. Special Events volunteers will be contacted as they are needed for special projects and events.

Junior Docent Volunteer Program
For volunteers ages 13 to 17, the Junior Docent Volunteer Program offers opportunities to learn about animals and share your knowledge. To apply, attend the next Junior Docent Informational meeting Saturday, May 3 at 10 a.m.  Applications will be given out at the meeting. Note that a parent or guardian must attend orientation with a prospective junior docent. Click here for a job description.
