Virginia Zoo Internship Programs

Education Department Internships

The Virginia Zoo’s Education Department provides students opportunities to intern within the Education Department throughout the year. Each internship is a three to four month commitment during which interns will be introduced to all aspects of conservation education in a Zoo setting. These internships are intended to give students conservation education and non-formal education experience and are not intended to be solely precursors to an animal keeper or veterinary position. Applicants should have a strong interest in education and be prepared to assist with the many different types of education programs provided by the Virginia Zoo. The Zoo’s Education Internships are unpaid, but there are many other benefits that will afford interns a valuable experience in conservation education.

Students applying should:

  • Be a current undergraduate or graduate student
  • Be available for at least a three month commitment
  • Be able to make at least a 240 hour commitment for the summer or 160 hour commitment during a fall/spring semester
  • Have reliable transportation to and from the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk, VA
  • Complete the application form: Online application form
  • Send the following documents by email, mail, or fax:
    • Transcript (unofficial is acceptable)
    • Letter of recommendation
    • Resume (suggested)

The application and all supplemental materials are due by (or postmarked by) March 1 (summer), August 1 (fall), or December 1 (spring) at 5:00 pm EST. For more information about the Virginia Zoo Education Internships, please email the Education Department
