Live animals are used in many educational programs at the Virginia Zoo. We believe that animals enrich our programs, extending and adding to the retention of what is being taught because they provide specific and concrete examples.
Animal handlers are extensively and ongoingly trained to follow protocols which comply with the requirements of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and other professional and state standards.
Shows featuring live animals will be featured at the ZooLive! Stage located near the Animal Wellness Center from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Save the dates for some fun days at the Zoo, starting this Spring. Our EdZOOcation Days make learning and conservation fun. From the biggest beast to the smallest bee, all animals are worth saving!
Our Animal Appreciation Days make learning and conservation fun, but with an added perk! If you Zoodopt the animal being appreciated during the event, you will be entered to win a Behind-the-Scenes tour in which you and one guest could meet your adopted animal up close and have a personal Q&A with a Zoo Keeper who cares for the animal.
