Description
Zebu are the oldest breed of cattle in the world dating back to 3,000 B.C. and are the only natural breed of mini cattle.
Range & Habitat
Zebu are domestic worldwide, however the species originated in India. Due to their tropical origin, these cows can handle very high temperatures.
At the Virginia Zoo, zebu can be found in our ZooFarm in the Green Barn.
Behavior
Due to their docile and social nature, zebu can share space with many other species and are great for interactions with children and families.
Diet
Miniature zebu cattle are herbivore primarily consuming grasses and hay.

- Zebus are highly resistant to viruses and different types of parasites.
- The miniature zebu is known as “nadudana” which is Hindi for “small cattle” as they were discovered in southern India.
