virginia zoo reopening procedures

After more than three months of being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Virginia Zoo is now open with some modifications and a new schedule. Take a look at our video for the highlights of what you can expect on your next Zoo visit.

Tickets are now on sale!

All visitors, including Zoo members, are required to purchase tickets in advance. No walk-ups are allowed at this time.


The Zoo is now open to the public!

New Hours:

All Visitors & Zoo Members: Thursday – Monday, 10 am to 5 pm

Zoo Members Only: Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 am to 5 pm

One-Way Path:

Asia – Trail of the Tiger and Africa – Okavanga Delta are one way paths.

All visitors and staff are required to wear face masks upon entry, indoors and when within 6 feet of others not in their group.

Zoo Train Now Open!

The Zoo Train is now open with increased cleaning protocols and new regulations to ride. Please be advised:

  • Masks are required to ride the train (ages 10+)
  • Riders should leave one bench between themselves and another party
  • Train tokens will not be sold. Instead, a “train ride” will be sold upon boarding by with cash or credit card at the Beazley train station only.

Temporarily Closed:

Gift Shop, World of Reptiles and ZooFarm, Australia Walkabout, Water Plaza and Membership Office are temporarily closed. Keeper Chats, ZooLive! Stage presentations and other animal programs are currently canceled.

  • There will be a limited menu available at designated food locations throughout the Zoo.
    • Africa Restaurant: Open 10 am to 4:30 pm
    • Beastro: Open Noon to 5 pm

To ensure the safety of our visitors, staff and animals, the Virginia Zoo is following these procedures until further notice:

  • A limited number of entries allowed per day at timed intervals
  • No-contact entry with online, advanced reservations
  • High touchpoint areas marked and cleaned frequently
  • Sanitizer stations located throughout the park, including food locations
  • Increased cleaning procedures
