Name the Newborns!
The Virginia Zoo’s baby zebra and bongo need names, and we need your help! Enter the naming contest for a chance to win a unique zoo prize pack. Help spread the word online to #namethenewborns!
We’re in search of two fitting names for these adorable girls born in June at the Virginia Zoo.
- The bongo calf was born June 26 to mom Juni, weighs 47 pounds and stands almost three feet tall. The calf joins five other females in the yard of the Africa: Okavango Delta exhibit. Our bongo babies have names with the first initial the same as their mother’s. This helps keep the babies associated with their moms. Bongo name submissions must start with the letter “J.”
- The zebra foal was born on Thursday, June 2 weighing 78 pounds and was approximately three feet tall. She will join mom Abby, dad Zack, sister Emilie and the other female zebra Rose. We’re looking for names with the initial “A” to match mom.
A judging panel of Zoo staff will select the names from your submissions.
Need some inspiration? Come to the Zoo and see them for yourself, then submit your names by JULY 8, 2016, 5 p.m. EST.
The person who submits the winning bongo name and the person who submits the winning zebra name will each win:
- An hour-long session with Zoo staff to make enrichment for the animals
- A family four-pack of tickets, train tokens and Virginia Zoo swag bag
