How long is my membership active?

Your Zoo membership will be valid for one year from your purchase date.

How long after I purchase a Zoo membership will I receive my membership card?

Your membership card should be available for pickup in our Membership Office 10 to 15 business days after you join. However, you can start using your membership benefits right away! Your online payment (PayPal) receipt or the receipt you received when you purchased your membership at the Zoo will act as your temporary pass until you pick up your permanent cards from the Membership Office.

If I join online, can I use my benefits when I visit the Zoo today?

Yes! If you have plans to visit the Zoo and wish to use your member benefits, simply join online. After your transaction is complete, you will receive payment confirmation from  PayPal. Please print the this confirmation and bring it with you to the Zoo. It will act as your temporary membership pass until you pick up your permanent cards from the Membership Office.

I want to purchase a membership as a gift for someone else. What’s the difference between a gift membership and a membership gift certificate?

Our recommendation is to purchase a gift certificate. This way, we can be sure the cards have the the correct contact information. When you purchase a gift certificate, the recipient will bring it with them to the Virginia Zoo the next time they visit in order to redeem the certificate for a membership. Membership gift certificates expire one year from the purchase date. The membership itself expires one year from the date the certificate is redeemed. If you still prefer to purchase the membership directly as a gift, we can do that, too.  We just need the name, address and number of children. The completed membership cards should be available for pickup in our Membership Office in 10 to 15 business days. The membership will expire one year from the date of purchase.

Can I lend my membership card to a friend?

No. Memberships are nontransferable and are intended for use by individual households only.

Can my child use our membership on a school field trip? 
Virginia Zoo member adults chaperoning a field trip can take their student child through the Members Entrance with their membership card and appropriate identification.  A photocopy of the Virginia Zoo membership card must be provided to the ticket booth upon arrival for member students that do not have a parent attending the field trip.  Students who do not have a photocopy of their Virginia Zoo Membership Card are required to pay the same fees as their classmates.

Can you add an additional adult or child to a membership level?

No. You must upgrade to the next level that allows additional guests.

What if lose my card? Can I get a new one?

If you lose your card, stop by or call the membership office at (757) 441-2374 for a replacement card. There is a $5 fee to reprint each card.

Why do I have to show a photo ID when I use my card?
We request a photo ID to help protect members whose cards might be lost or stolen.

Is a Virginia Zoo membership good at other zoos?

Yes! The Virginia Zoo has a reciprocal agreement with hundreds of zoos throughout the country. These zoos or aquariums offer Virginia Zoo members free or discounted admission to their institutions. Each participating zoo or aquarium is responsible for determining their reciprocal admission policies. We strongly recommends calling ahead before visiting a reciprocal institution to confirm their offer.

Who can purchase a military membership?

Anyone with a valid military ID (active, retired or adult dependent) can purchase a military membership. When purchasing the membership, you must show your valid ID and when you visit the Zoo, you must show your valid ID with their membership card at the ticket gates.
