Honoring African History During Black History Month

Africa is a continent rich in history and home to many species on exhibit at the Virginia Zoo. Our Africa exhibit presents exotic animals such as lions, giraffe, and meerkats in spaces that faithfully represent the true terrain of their homeland. Our hope is to help visitors feel more connected to the wildlife, habitats and beauty of that part of world.

Every February during African American History Month, we also post signs throughout the Africa exhibit to teach visitors more about this exciting land and its fascinating history.

Many people are familiar with the story of Hannibal and his elephants. The famous general was based in the city of Carthage, which is now Tunisia in North Africa.  In the 3rd century B.C., he led an army of infantry, cavalry and elephants over the Alps to wage war against the Romans.

But do you also know the history of King Alfonso I of the Congo, the merchant traders of Kenya who successfully shipped a pair of giraffe to China, the Emperors of Ethiopia who were also known as “Lion of Judah,” and King Musa who made a famous pilgrimage to Mecca? Visit the Africa exhibit at the Virginia Zoo and check out the African American History Month signs to learn more about Africa’s amazing history.
